travelogue: cedar key, florida

October 18, 2011

feeling completely overwhelmed by my perpetually whirring wanderlust, i awoke last saturday to the familiar backroads of the lower suwannee valley calling my name. what started as a day trip to check in on my late grandmother's homestead ended up as an overniter in the totally adorbs cedar key. recently named one of the 10 coolest small towns in america, this fishing village is charmingly ramshackle and, at pop. 896, dually quaint. my family has roots in the area going back hundreds of years so, naturally, i was psyched to introduce michael and ace. we were totally enamored and found cedar key to be equal parts pirate tale (the area was once frequented by the likes of jean lafitte and captain kidd),  history book (traces of human occupation dating back to 500 bc have been found on the islands!) and ghost story (the headless woman haunts the nearby shell mound). what we also found (in all our off the cuff glory) were the streets jam-packed and a sign declaring the town's 42nd annual fall seafood festival. this turned out to be both a blessing (lots to do and see) and curse (next to no hotel rooms). nevertheless, we made the best of it with a sunrise walk along the beach, breakfast at a local cafe, a stroll along this gorgeous waterfront,

shopping on dock street, a mosey thru the local cemetery (spooky and so halloweenie!) and some cruising the streets on our rented golf cart (they were everywhere on the island and undoubtedly ace's favorite part!).

at the festival i had the best fish nuggets (made by the local ffa kids) and found the most amazing handmade cedar furniture, the coolest lobstertrap coffee tables (i'm a sucker for anything nautical) and an adorable wooden bulldozer toy for ace (similar styles here, here and here).

we had such a wonderful time and it was great to get away as a family, even if only for a bit. can't wait for next time!
